Student Life

ACTIVITIES

Our activities program promotes physical and creative development through sports, theater, music, clubs, and service. Grades 10-12 must participate in two/three activities per week, while grades 7-9 must take four. Activities run Monday-Thursday, 16:00-18:30, and vary by term. In the spring semester, full IB Diploma seniors are exempt from activities.

LAS Team Uniforms
LAS team uniforms and warm-up kit cost approximately 200 CHF per sport. Students keep these items at the end of the season for future use.

External Activities & Private Lessons
In partnership with external providers in the Leysin community, LAS offers further activities like horseback riding, kickboxing, and golf where additional fees are applied to the student's account. Private lessons are also available in certain activities and music.

Activity Grades
All activities are graded based on attendance and participation. Students missing an activity, practice, or ski lesson must make it up to avoid a failing grade. Absences due to health must be made up once the student is able. Missing activities may prevent commendation list placement and result in the loss of pass permission until made up. Attendance codes: A (Absent), H/D (Health Center/Doctor’s visit), Y (Excused for activities), P (Parent-excused), 2 (Winter term, requires makeup).

Make-Up Workout
Wednesday mornings in the MMAC or BEC gyms allow students to make up “A” (Absent) absences with a workout. Completing a workout changes the attendance code to “U,” and the grade reverts to passing once all unexcused absences are made up.

SKI TERM

Located in the Swiss Alps, Leysin offers LAS students the unique opportunity to enjoy its ski runs for all levels and a world-class snow park with a halfpipe.

Modified Daily Schedule
LAS offers an 8-week winter term (January to March). On Tuesdays and Thursdays students are dismissed after lunch to participate in skiing and snowboarding activities.

Weekend Skiing
To ski on the weekend in Leysin, students must:

  • Have weekend free-skiing permission
  • Check out with a rover or AOC
  • Be in a group of at least three
  • Carry a phone
  • Wear the LAS ski jacket

Pre-Season Skiing
Only returning students in advanced or intermediate groups, or new students with approval from the Student Life department, may ski in the pre-season.

Skiing or Snowboarding Off-Piste
Off-piste skiing or snowboarding is prohibited at LAS due to risks like avalanches, trees, and rocks. Violations can result in punishment and loss of privileges, unless accompanied by a certified off-piste guide with parental permission. Skiing in out-of-bounds areas, such as closed trails or marked zones, is also banned due to hidden hazards and lack of monitoring.

The LAS avalanche program educates students on avalanche terrain, risks, and causes to help them make safer decisions. However, it does not grant permission to ski off-piste. Our policy against off-piste skiing remains in place. Advanced students can take a course with Swiss mountain guides, which includes in-class learning, a full-day session on the mountain, and three afternoons of guided skiing at nearby resorts.

Day Student Skiers
Day students are not expected at the 16:00-17:00 ski check-in and should return home instead.
